Photographic exhibitions in Trieste

This month is a celebration for photography enthusiasts: there are five photographic exhibitions active in Trieste in April 2023.

Here are the appointments waiting for you:

“Foto omnia” by Ugo Borsatti

The archive of Ugo Borsatti, one of the greatest Trieste photographers, has more than 350,000 negatives, mainly on film.

The exhibition offers 200 photographs, some of them never presented to the public, a selection of cameras and other materials on the work of the photographer who more than any other has been able to immortalize the spirit of Trieste.

“What your eyes can see not” by Andrea Tomicich

The exhibition studies the invisible light of the human eye: the photographs are made using the infrared technique, which allows to capture a range of dark light from the visible.

In order to make this possible, Tomicich has conceived and created specific camera and objective for this function: what we observe is therefore not the result of elaborations, but is an aspect of reality that is unknown to us.

“Lost Places” by Barbara Essl

60 works by the Austrian photoartist Barbara Essl, who has been working since 2013 on the series “Lost Places”, which focuses on the fascinating dissolution of decaying and forgotten places, figures and objects.

. Using different photographic and pictorial techniques, the artist reveals their uniqueness and imbues them with an aura of mystery, thus tracing their soul and making them resonate again. The exhibition includes photographs of historic buildings in Trieste, Rijeka, Venice and Vienna.

“African Portraits” by Seydou Keïta, Malick Sidibé and Samuel Fosso

Portraiture has certainly been the genre of choice for many African photographers throughout the last century.

Discovered only in relatively recent years, the three artists have been presented in the largest museums in the world, but only on two other occasions before now their works have been proposed in an exclusive dialogue.

“Remembering the victims, admonishing the living” by Marino Ierman

The 20 photographs selected for this exhibition tell the story of the Risiera, covering its monumental spaces in a sharp black and white and offering a silent and solitary contemplation.

Seeing the exhibition is an opportunity to visit the Risiera, a former concentration camp originally created as a plant for the piling of rice.
