We warn you: going for a swim here in Trieste could be a strange experience, if you come from outside.
Here, in fact, we lack sandy beaches in Lignano Sabbiadoro style, because we prefer to sunbathe all day on the seafront of Barcola and diving from a rock.
The “real” beaches are a bit uncomfortable to reach: if you have a car, we suggest you go to “I Filtri” where, if you prefer to sunbathe without swimsuit, you will also find a naturist beach.
If your goal is to get to the beach as soon as possible without stress, we recommend you Barcola, the favorite destination of most of Trieste. Here you will find the 10 Topolini, public establishments completely free made in the ’30s, which are both terrace on the top and a comfortable changing room, with showers and toilets too.
On the promenade you will find the “Baracchini”, small bars that will save you from hunger and thirst and strategic points where you can get an Aperol Spritz with friends, when the sun begins to set. If you choose the Topolino number 10, also, crossing the road you can get an ice cream from Pipolo, one of the historic ice cream shops in Trieste (try the “Mousse alla Nutella”, seriously).
Bus to reach Barcola:
Nº 6 – direction “Grignano”
Nº 36 – direction “Miramare”
Departure stop for both at the beginning of Via Battisti, Piazza Oberdan, Via Ghega or Central Station. If you leave from Hotello, the most convenient stop is Via Ghega 6.
