Trieste and the Karst botanical gardens

Whether you’re capable of growing trees in your studio apartment or are afraid to change the water to a bouquet of cut flowers, you’ll love the botanical gardens of Trieste and of the Karst!

Spontaneous, indoor, ornamental, edible, magical, dyeing… The variety of existing plants is amazing, their uses throughout history are often very curious.

Sometimes however approaching the plant world triggers adverse reactions and the gift of a plant can make our palms sweat.

After a few months we will have forgotten that event, we will invite the person who gave us that gift to dinner and the friend, upon arriving home, will look around in vain for traces of the aloe vera he had chosen for us.

Some people are able to grow trees in a studio apartment, while others dread the idea of changing the water to a bouquet of cut flowers.

However when flowers and plants appear neatly cataloged in collections, are presented organized through scientific criteria such as seasonality or the natural environment to which they belong, then even those most averse to approaching the plant world are persuaded. The survival of that beauty does not hang by the thread of their care and they are relieved.

It happens in botanical gardens.

Botanical orti and botanical giardini: what they are, what they have in common, and what differentiates them

A orto botanico is an artificially recreated natural environment in which plants appear categorized to meet scientific and educational purposes.

The word orto has ancient roots, recalling the hortus medicus of medieval monasteries and referring to the cultivation of medicinal plants.

Giardino, on the other hand, carries with it the aesthetic attention and care of all those elements that allow one to enjoy even more fully the spectacle of flowers and plants, such as resting places, natural or semi-natural water features.

Trieste’s city center and in the neighborhood of the city you find the Civic Botanical Garden and the Carsiana Botanical Garden, both founded on the initiative of pharmacists: botany is intimately connected to the cultivation of medicinal and officinal plants.

Trieste and its two botanical gardens, one in the city center and one on the Karst highland: the Civic Botanical Garden and Carsiana tell a unique approach to plant and floral collections

The Civic Botanical Garden of Trieste and the Carsiana Botanical Garden differ from each other in their approach to telling the story of the world of plants, flowers and their habitats: the first is a giardino botanico, the second is a orto botanico.

The Civic Botanical Garden is an artificial and rigorous construction that brings to the heart of the city a rich plant collection, the variety of which is evidenced by the Index Seminum, the annually published list of all species whose seeds and collection data are offered.

The Carsiana Botanical Garden allows visitors to approach plant collections by encountering them precisely in their chosen environment, the Karst: the wild flora and vegetation of the rocky highland have been collected, preserved and illustrated in their natural context.

The botanical orti e giardini of Trieste and the Karst: history, project and paths among the plant and flower collections

The Civic Botanical Garden of Trieste was born in 1844 from an experiment, from the trials of Austrian black pine rooting on the Karst. The Garden, open “to public walking” since 1873, was later annexed to the Museum of Natural History and today the Garden is part of the Civic Science Museums network.

The Civic Botanical Garden is an artificially recreated natural environment in which plants appear categorized for educational purposes into areas with evocative and suggestive names: the magic plant florilegium, the poison garden, the herb tints.. The formal garden recounts through decorative plants the very ancient propensity to civilize nature, while the garden of simples takes you back to the collections of officinal herbs for the preparation of simples, that is, the raw drugs of medieval pharmacopoeia.

If you love classical literature you could choose one of the paths inspired by Shakespearean genius.

The Carsiana Botanical Garden was founded in 1964: as the name anticipates, it is an immersion among the habitats that can be encountered on the Karst, the rocky highland that stretches about 700 sq. m. between Italy and Slovenia.

Scrubland, screes, coastal cliffs, doline and wells, to Mediterranean gardens and meadows to mow: the place where Carsiana was founded is a small strip of land specifically chosen because it encloses the main geomorphological conformations of the area with which the respective plant formations have been associated.
