The myth of African art in the 20th Century: exhibition in Porto Vecchio

The exhibition “The Myth of African Art in the 20th Century: from Picasso to Man Ray, from Calder to Basquiat and Matisse”, on display from 25th March to 30th July 2023, arrives in Trieste.

On display are 50 works of European art and over 100 plastic and sculptural works from sub-Saharan Africa chosen by curators Vincenzo Sanfo, Anna Alberghina and Bruno Albertino.

African art fascinates modern and contemporary artists and is an interest that started precisely in 1906, when Henri Matisse and other artists began to collect African works and to re-use those types of motifs in their artistic creation. Avant-garde artists, first and foremost Picasso, began to experiment and integrate African-type stylistic motifs into their works.

And it is precisely through works by Picasso, Matisse, Gauguin, Man Ray and the more contemporary Mimmo Paladino, Basquiat and Xu de Qi that the exhibition “The myth of African art in the 20th Cenury” intends to immerse the viewer in this foreign-to-most art and to grasp its essence.

The exhibition is divided into two parts and aims to highlight how much African art has contributed and continues to contribute to the evolution of Western art. The first part hosts the sculptures from the Collection of curators Bruno Albertino and Anna Alberghina, the result of over 30 years of travel and study, divided into nine themes. The second part is dedicated to the exhibition of 20th Century works depicting the African myth. Photos and videos are also produced by the curators themselves.

A culture that fascinates, seduces and brings one closer to an aesthetic of spirituality and mysticism.
An experience not to be missed!
